Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation
The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation (BBP), a not for profit corporation, is responsible for the design, construction and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85 acre, 1.3 mile, world-class park that stretches along the Brooklyn waterfront from Atlantic Avenue to Jay Street, north of the Manhattan Bridge. It has already reconnected the citizens of Brooklyn to their waterfront, replacing abandoned piers, parking lots and storage sheds with opportunities to play sports, stroll, or lounge at the water’s edge. Adding much-needed open space for Brooklyn and New York City residents, Brooklyn Bridge Park will contribute to the extraordinary revitalization of waterfront in the New York Harbor, serving as a bridge from the commercial uses of previous centuries to the recreational uses of the future. Construction of the park is ongoing, and BBPC operates areas of the park as they open to the public, while continuing to construct the remaining portions of the park design.
A custodian in the Maintenance & Operations division (M&O) is an important staff position. Working collaboratively with other team members, and reporting to BBP’s Crew Chief and Supervisors, the custodian is responsible for maintaining all day-to-day aspects of park operations commensurate with established organizational mission, values, and standards.
Primary tasks include:
1. Act in a general custodial capacity throughout the park including emptying trash/recycling cans, picking up any errant trash, maintaining the cleanliness of restrooms and surfaces; work with the M&O team to perform all snow removal, etc.;
2. Provide support to other members of the Brooklyn Bridge Park operations staff on a variety of tasks from maintenance work to gardening;
3. Report graffiti and any damaged or broken park features to supervisor;
4. Report any rule enforcement needs to the Park Enforcement Police (PEP) and park supervision;
5. Provide support with the set-up and breakdown of public programs and events;
6. Provide positive customer service to park visitors including answering questions and conveying park information;
7. Perform other duties as required in the scope of the job and as designated by Operations Management.
Professional experience with any of the above tasks will be viewed favorably. Candidates must be capable of working additional hours, under pressure, and independently as necessary, while handling a diverse range of responsibilities. Position: Seasonal Gardener
Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85 acre, 1.3 mile, world-class park that stretches along the Brooklyn waterfront from Atlantic Avenue to Jay Street. Since 2010, more than 40 acres of new park space opened, reconnecting the citizens of Brooklyn to their waterfront, and providing needed open space and recreational opportunities. Brooklynites can now enjoy wonderful new features including lawns, playgrounds, biking and boating.
BBP’s Seasonal Gardening team is a critical part of the Park Maintenance & Operations (M&O) staff. Reporting to the Director of Horticulture and under the general supervision of the Director of Operations, the Seasonal Gardeners are responsible for daily horticulture maintenance from early spring until late fall. Gardeners will care for thousands of new trees and plants in diverse, organic ecosystems including lawns, wetlands, salt marshes, green roofs, successional native forests, and formal ornamental entrances. All plantings and lawns are to be maintained sustainably, in first class condition commensurate with the design of the park. Working closely with the entire BBP team, the Seasonal Gardeners’ responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Caring for thousands of newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses
•Planting and transplanting herbaceous plants and small trees
•Understory tree and shrub pruning and maintenance
•Mowing and string trimming
•Maintenance of all essential machinery
•Weeding, brush clearing, and mulching
•Leaf removal, i.e. raking, sweeping, and vacuuming
•Debris and trash removal
•Irrigation repair and instillation
•Composting and compost facility maintenance
•Interacting with park patrons in a professional manner as a representative of BBP
•Leading volunteer groups and training long-term Zone Volunteers
•Conducting educational workshops and tours for the public
•Two or more years of horticulture experience or degree in horticulture and/or related field
•Experience with various landscape maintenance equipment
•Knowledge of plant material, including turf
•Knowledge of plant diseases and pests, as well as IPM strategies
•Strong weed identification and management skills
•Irrigation systems knowledge a plus
•Strong communication skills, written and spoken
•Valid Driver’s License preferred
•Ability to perform heavy, physical labor (lift 40 lbs) on a daily basis in all weather conditions
•Ability to work independently and with others
