In 1795, the site of the present day Main Street playground was the landing site for the "New Ferry" to Catherine Street in Manhattan. The ferry was literally horse-powered, driven by wheels turned by horses walking in circles.

Recreation in Brooklyn Bridge Park

The plan for Brooklyn Bridge Park includes an extraordinary range of public recreation opportunities, with over 40 acres of active recreation space including:

  • two multi-purpose playing fields for soccer, softball, lacrosse, cricket, rugby and other field sports on Pier 5 ( a total of 3.7 acres of open ball fields);
  • 6 basketball courts, 10 handball courts and 2 volleyball courts;
  • 3 tennis courts;
  • an in-line hockey rink;
  • 3 playgrounds;
  • a bike and in-line skating path the entire length of the park;
  • a 12-acre safe paddling zone;
  • a seasonal ice-skating rink.

In total, Brooklyn Bridge Park will provide more than 77 acres for both active and more passive recreation.
