The Cove Between the Bridges
Between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge on the Brooklyn shore of the East River, in the midst of the hardscape grandeur of New York City, lies the Cove Between the Bridges, one of the few places on the New York City waterfront that gives visitors true access to the water. It is also a rich habitat for fish, crabs, and birds of the New York Harbor Estuary.
The Cove was formed by the turbulent waters of the estuary. The large rocks that edge the Cove, set in place in 2002-2003 by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation,
have been strategically positioned as rip-rap, to prevent waters from carrying off any more land.
