Free Outdoor Film Series Movies With A View Returns for Tenth Anniversary Season
Series Presented by SCI FI Channel
Popular series returns Thursday, July 9, for eight-week run.
BROOKLYN, June 23, 2009 - The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy is pleased to announce the lineup for the tenth annual Movies With A View outdoor summer film series presented by SCI FI Channel. The free series, held in the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park section of Brooklyn Bridge Park, will feature films from a wide range of genres and periods, including Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Paper Moon, and 1975's The Return of the Pink Panther. The series begins on Thursday, July 9, with Raising Arizona and runs weekly through Thursday, August 27, concluding with Edward Scissorhands.
"Over the past ten years, Movies With A View has become a summer tradition for thousands of New Yorkers," said Nancy Webster, acting executive director of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. "The series is at the core of our programming-a real community event that brings people from all over city to the beginnings of Brooklyn Bridge Park."
"Our second annual sponsorship of ‘Movies With A View' is a great way for SCI FI to include New Yorkers in our summer of imagination as the Channel officially becomes Syfy in July," said Blake Callaway, Vice President of Brand Marketing, SCI FI. "Both the Channel and the film series offer evenings of unlimited imagination, exceptional experiences and, not to mention, a terrific view!"
The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy launched Movies With A View ten years ago and works with a volunteer Film Committee, made up of members of the local community, to curate an exciting lineup of films. This year's Committee selected an imaginative group of films organized around a theme of "Stolen Summer."

With a venue noted for spectacular views as well as the quality of its films, the free series attracts thousands of people each summer to the waterfront park. Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park and its immediate neighbor, a city park, constitute the first 12 acres of the larger Brooklyn Bridge Park. Designed by the landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, and currently under construction by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation, Brooklyn Bridge Park will feature 76 acres of lawns, recreation fields, water access, esplanades, and playgrounds. The first phase of park construction at Pier 1 continues to be underway and includes over 1300 feet of promenade along the East River, and 2.5 acres of lawn with breathtaking views of the New York Harbor and the Brooklyn Bridge. Once completed, Pier 1 will add 9.5 new acres of park to the already existing Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park and the Main Street City Park. Pier 6 will add about 7 acres of new park, including a 1.6 acre destination playground with water play areas and innovative play equipment built into the park landscape. A promenade will lead to incredible views of lower Manhattan and the New York Harbor. Three sand volleyball courts, a concession and dog run will also be constructed at Pier 6.
"For ten years the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy has hosted Movies With A View and the outdoor film series continues to be a summer sensation," said Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation President Regina Myer. "We look forward to opening the first portions of Brooklyn Bridge Park at the end of this year and working with the Conservancy to continue to develop successful programming like Movies With A View, that allow New Yorkers and tourists to experience this incredible destination."
As with seasons past, Movies With A View will also screen a short film by an independent filmmaker prior to each evening's feature. Brooklyn Radio will set the scene with pre-movie mood music from some of New York City's best DJ's. RICE will provide delicious dinners on site, and Transportation Alternatives will be on hand to provide free bike valet parking.
The films start at sundown, but patrons are invited to come early, spread out a blanket, grab some popcorn, and enjoy a beautiful evening in the park!
