Fun Fact
The East River is not a river, and its name did not come from its location east of Manhattan. Technically, it is a tidal strait, a channel connecting two seawater bodies, Upper New York Bay and Long Island Sound. The name came because American colonists used it to travel east.

Kayaking and Community Rowing

Boating

 

Boating Get out on the water for kayaking and community rowing with The Gowanus Dredgers and  The Village Community Boathouse at Main Street and the newly opened Pier 1!

There is no need to sign up in advance; boating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. No training or prior experience is needed. Bring clothes you don't mind getting wet, and shoes or sandals suitable for walking on a rocky beach. The only requirement is that you know how to swim. All equipment is provided free. Please note that there will be some variation in times due to tide conditions.
 
Kayaking and canoeing will be inside a protected cove. Rowing will be in a group rowboat with an experienced guide. Children under 18 must have an adult guardian present. FREE!
