Fun Fact
In 1748, the colonial charters gave New York ownership control of all the waterfront on both sides of the river and therefore received all rent and taxes from the ferry operators. Naturally, Brooklynites disagreed with this arrangement and an angry mob burned the Brooklyn ferry house to the ground.

Open to the public for the first time, Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1 offered spectacular views of New York Harbor and The New York City Waterfalls by Olafur Eliasson, presented by the Public Art Fund. Affectionately known as the "pop-up park" Pier 1 featured a cafe run by local restaurant RICE, along with picnic tables, benches, landscaping with trees and grass, and (arguably) Brooklyn's largest sand play area. The 26,000 square foot site was designed by landscape architects dlandstudio.

Pier 1 welcomed over 190,000 visitors from 440 different zip codes
during its 13 1/2 week season.

Pier 1 was located on the East River at the base of Old Fulton Street and Furman Street and was accessible by subway via the A/C at High Street, the 2/3 at Clark Street, and the 4/5 at Borough Hall.
SUMMER '08 @ PIER 1 opened under the partnership of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, along with the State of New York and the City of New York. Shuttle operations are provided by the Downtown Brooklyn Waterfront Local Development Corporation with funding by Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez.
