Brooklyn Bridge Park Announces call for Volunteer Zone Gardeners

The Park seeks dedicated and skilled volunteers to care for plantings

Brooklyn Bridge Park is initiating its first-ever volunteer-based zone gardening program to augment existing volunteer efforts. The zone gardeners will care for more than 3 acres of garden beds throughout the waterfront park. Brooklyn Bridge Park is an award-winning park designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, and is lauded for its diversity of ecosystems including newly created salt marshes, fresh water gardens, perennial borders, organically maintained lawns and native tree species.

Members of this dedicated horticultural team will receive specialized training by the park’s horticulturalist and will maintain a specified zone of park plants. Weekly training will be required as well as a specific dedication of hours per week.

Some previous horticulture experience is required, and prospective applicants should be prepared for work that may be physically demanding and must be performed in all weather conditions.

Please note that there are limited opportunities for Zone Gardener volunteer positions and volunteers will be evaluated based on their skills, experience and availability.

For a downloadable volunteer application, go to the official park website at www.brooklynbridgeparknyc.org. All applicants will be asked to attend an orientation session with the park horticulturalist.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, known as Brooklyn Bridge Park, is the not-for-profit entity responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85-acre sustainable waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River shoreline. More information is available on the official park website: www.brooklynbridgeparknyc.org.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of the nine waterfront destinations that comprise NYHarborWay, an initiative of the Bloomberg Administration to make the New York Harbor a major recreational destination for New Yorkers and visitors. Spearheaded by NYC & Company, the initiative eventually will connect the nine major waterfront points of interest by ferry or bike greenways. In addition, NYHarborWay will develop a cohesive programming, marketing and communications platform which will drive visitation to the nine waterfront sites. In addition to Brooklyn Bridge Park, the destinations are Governors Island, Hudson River Park, The Battery, Ellis Island, Liberty Island, Atlantic Basin, the East River Esplanade and Liberty State Park.
