Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation Assumes Management of Main Street Portion of Park from  NYC Department of Parks & Recreation

Change in Management started December 1st

As of December 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park assumed the management and operation of the Main Street portion of the park.

Opened in December 2002, Main Street was a former city-owned parking lot and was designed and constructed by NYC Department of Parks and Recreation as an early portion of Brooklyn Bridge Park.  Main Street quickly established itself as a popular waterfront destination for Dumbo neighborhood residents and its visitors, attracting picnickers, wedding parties, dog walkers and tourists with its striking views and innovative amenities allowing visitors to experience the East River in a dramatic setting underneath the Manhattan Bridge.  The 4.8 acre park features expansive lawns, riverside seating areas, a nautically-themed playground, promenades and pathways, and a dog run.

Brooklyn Bridge Park will now maintain the park plantings and lawns, manage security, garbage removal and pest management, issue permits for park activities and work with existing park constituents to continue established events, including walk up kayaking.

A small section of the park will be closed in the short-term to accommodate completion of the connection between the renovated Empire Fulton Ferry and Main Street sections of the park.

The park will remain open and accessible during this management transition and park hours will remain the same.

Regina Myer, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park said, “One of the delights of the Main Street section of the park is the wonderful river steps that bring the visitor directly to the East River’s edge.   The popular playground is also a remarkable asset to the neighborhood and its visitors.  We are pleased to maintain this pioneering section of Brooklyn Bridge Park.”

“For several years, New Yorkers have flocked to Main Street to enjoy the earliest portion of Brooklyn Bridge Park including its innovative playground designed as a ship and its stunning waterfront views,” said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe.  “With this year’s openings of Pier 1 and Pier 6, Brooklyn Bridge Park has emerged as one of the borough’s most celebrated attractions.  Regina Myer and her team at Brooklyn Bridge Park have done a remarkable job and have been a great partner to Parks.  I am thrilled that their management is being expanded to include the Main Street portion of the park and I look forward to our continued partnership.”

Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, known as Brooklyn Bridge Park, is the not-for-profit entity responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85-acre sustainable waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River shoreline.  The park was designed by the award-winning firm of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc.  More information is available on the park’s website:

Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of the nine waterfront destinations that comprise NYHarborWay, an initiative of the Bloomberg Administration to make the New York Harbor a major recreational destination for New Yorkers and visitors. Spearheaded by NYC & Company, the initiative eventually will connect the nine major waterfront points of interest by ferry or bike greenways. In addition, NYHarborWay will develop a cohesive programming, marketing and communications platform which will drive visitation to the nine waterfront sites. In addition to Brooklyn Bridge Park, the destinations are Governors Island, Hudson River Park, The Battery, Ellis Island, Liberty Island, Atlantic Basin, the East River Esplanade and Liberty State Park.
