For Immediate Release
BROOKLYN, May 10, 2012 - The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, in cooperation with Brooklyn Bridge Park, is pleased to announce the lineup for its outdoor film series Syfy Movies With A View. The free series will take place on Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and will feature films from a wide range of genres and periods, including the classic To Kill A Mockingbird, Slumdog Millionaire, and the comedy Clueless. The series begins on Thursday, July 5, with E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and runs weekly through Thursday, August 30.
Syfy has been a presenting sponsor of Movies With A View, now in its thirteenth year, since 2008. As presenting sponsor, Syfy makes it possible for the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy to continue to bring the popular annual series to New Yorkers. At each outdoor film screening, Syfy will be offering weekly raffles. To start the evening, Brooklyn Radio will provide pre-movie DJ music, and bicycle enthusiasts will enjoy free bike parking by Transportation Alternatives. Media sponsors include Time Out New York and Brownstoner. On-site first aid will be provided by SUNY Downstate at LICH.
"Free outdoor movies in Brooklyn Bridge Park have become a beloved summer tradition for thousands of New Yorkers," said Nancy Webster, executive director of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. "We are pleased to partner with Syfy and Brooklyn Bridge Park to present Syfy Movies With A View and invite patrons to come early, spread out a blanket, grab some popcorn, and enjoy a beautiful evening in the park."
“Syfy Movies with a View is a wonderful and imaginative way to celebrate summer in one of New York’s most beautiful settings. As sponsors and movie fans, we’re thrilled to support this unique tradition, “ said Michael Engleman, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Global Brand Strategy, Syfy and Chiller.
“Catching a film on Pier 1’s Harbor View lawn is a great way to spend a summer evening,” said Regina Myer, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park. “I’m thrilled that Syfy has teamed up with the Conservancy to sponsor this great lineup of movies at Brooklyn Bridge Park and that BAMcinématek is returning to bring their distinctive cultural stamp to each evening.”
The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy launched the film series thirteen years ago and, each year, curates an exciting lineup of films with a volunteer Film Committee of community members who share a love of film. This year's Committee selected an imaginative group of films organized around the theme "Stages of Life”—the range of films provides varied periods of one’s life and are shown in order of life stage, from childhood to old age.
The Committee worked tirelessly this year, reviewing and discussing hundreds of films, before settling on these nine wonderful and diverse stories of coming of age.,” said Hilary Tholen, chair of the Conservancy's volunteer Film Committee. “We think our selections will have something for everyone this summer."
Noted for a location with spectacular views and for showing quality films, Syfy Movies With A View attracts thousands of people each summer to the waterfront park. This will be the series’ third year at Pier 1.
Brooklyn Bridge Park is a world-class 85-acre sustainable park. Designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, the park features expansive lawns, waterfront promenades, playgrounds, a greenway, dog runs and numerous concessions. More of the park is coming on-line this year with Pier 5 and the Squibb Park Bridge opening this fall. Pier 5 will have three active recreational fields and feature a Picnic Peninsula. Squibb Park Bridge will serve as the new pedestrian connection from Columbia Heights, bringing visitors quickly and directly to Pier 1.
Brooklyn Radio will set the scene with pre-movie mood music from some of New York City's best DJs. Transportation Alternatives will provide free bike valet parking, and the New York Amateur Astronomer's Association will be on hand to help stargazers scan the skies with telescopes provided by Syfy.
Music starts at 6:00 pm, and the films begin at sundown. Park concessionaires Ditch Plains, Blue Marble Ice Cream and Brooklyn Bridge Wine Bar will be offering food and drink for purchase.
