Seasonal Turf and Irrigation Technician

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation (“BBP”) is the not‐for-profit corporation responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85‐acre sustainable waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River shoreline. Since 2010, BBP has constructed and opened more than 55 acres of new park space, reconnecting the public to the waterfront and providing world class open space and recreational opportunities. Design and construction of additional park space is currently funded and underway.

The Turf & Irrigation Technician will report to the Turf Manager and Director of Horticulture and will work with other members of the horticulture department to maintain irrigation system and assist in other turf maintenance practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily turf maintenance including: mowing, string trimming, seeding, fertilizing, watering, and laying sod
  • Maintain all components related to irrigation system
  • Perform irrigation winterization to all systems
  • Assist with a variety of renovation projects including aeration, topdressing, and re-sodding
  • Organize, complete inventory, and maintain records of irrigation equipment
  • Safely apply fertilizers and complete records of application
  • Operate hand tools such as pole saws, loppers, hand saws, rakes, and shovels
  • Operate small equipment such as walk- and riding- lawnmowers, string trimmers, edge trimmers, and backpack leaf blowers
  • Operate large equipment such as motorized utility vehicles, tractors, and aeration equipment
  • Ensure all equipment is secured and well-maintained, including: washing, greasing, fueling, and arranging for service of equipment.
  • Perform other general tasks as assigned by the Director of Horticulture and Turf Manager

Qualifications:

  • 2 or 4 year degree in turfgrass management or related field OR three (3) years hands-on experience in turf grass and irrigation maintenance OR any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary
  • Strong communication skills
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions
  • Ability to use power equipment and hand tools
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

Seasonal Gardener

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation (“BBP”) is the not‐for-profit corporation responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85‐acre sustainable waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River shoreline. Since 2010, BBP has constructed and opened more than 55 acres of new park space, reconnecting the public to the waterfront and providing world class open space and recreational opportunities. Design and construction of additional park space is currently funded and underway.

Working collaboratively with other team members, the Seasonal Gardener is responsible for daily horticultural management of of Brooklyn Bridge Park, commensurate with established organizational mission, values, and standards. All beds, trees, and lawns are managed organically, with an emphasis on ecology. This position reports to the Horticulture Supervisors and the Director of Horticulture.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting Gardeners with the daily tasks of managing BBP’s planted areas
  • Caring for thousands of newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses
  • Planting and transplanting herbaceous plants and small trees
  • Understory tree and shrub pruning and maintenance
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Mowing and string trimming
  • Maintenance of all essential equipment
  • Weeding, brush clearing, and mulching
  • Debris and trash removal
  • Composting and compost facility maintenance
  • Research, data collection, and horticultural database maintenance
  • Interacting with park patrons in a professional manner as a representative of BBP
  • Leading volunteer groups and training long-term Zone Volunteers
  • Conducting educational workshops and tours for the public
  • Provide support to other members of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Operations Staff on a variety of tasks from maintenance work to gardening;
  • Perform other duties as required in the scope of the job and as designated by Operations Management.

Qualifications:

  • One or more years of horticulture experience or degree in horticulture and/or related field
  • Experience with various landscape maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of plant material, including turf
  • Knowledge of plant diseases and pests, as well as IPM strategies
  • Strong weed identification and management skills
  • Familiarity with irrigation systems
  • Ability to perform heavy, physical labor (lift 40 lbs) on a daily basis in all weather conditions
  • Previous experience in a facility maintenance and/or park setting;
  • Hardworking, energetic, self-motivated, and dedicated to the details;
  • Strong communication skills and basic computer knowledge
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed;
  • Comfortable working independently or with a team and outside in a park-setting.
  • Valid NYS Driver License

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week, non-exempt position. Staff members holding this position should expect to be available for work one weekend day.

Human Resources Manager (Part-time)

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation (“BBP”) is the not‐for-profit corporation responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85‐acre sustainable waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River shoreline. Since 2010, BBP has constructed and opened more than 55 acres of new park space, reconnecting the public to the waterfront and providing world class open space and recreational opportunities. Design and construction of additional park space is currently funded and underway.

The Human Resources Manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of BBP’s human resources function. BBP currently employs approximately 50 full-time, year-round staff, as well as seasonal employees. This is a unique opportunity to be a key part of the creation and operation of a world class, innovative and transformational public space.

Responsibilities:

  • Managing the hiring process, including advertising positions, reviewing resumes, coordinating interviews, conducting reference and background checks, and drafting offer letters
  • Managing the orientation process for new employees
  • Administering employee benefits programs such as life, health, dental and disability insurances, pension plans, vacation, sick leave, leave of absence, and employee assistance
  • Maintaining up-to-date personnel information and files
  • Overseeing the standard employee review process, including reviewing performance evaluations, attending employee evaluation meetings
  • Overseeing the employee disciplinary process, including reviewing write-ups, attending disciplinary and termination meetings
  • Managing employee separation process, including conducting exit interviews, overseeing transition of benefits, and preparing employee separation notices
  • Addressing personnel-related issues and identifying issues to be referred for further investigation
  • Updating internal policies and procedures
  • Monitoring and implementing applicable human resource federal and state requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • PHR/SPHR preferred
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience, with progressively increasing responsibilities
  • Strong knowledge of local, state and federal employment law and regulations
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, with an ability to clearly and effectively present information to senior management
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively, multi-task, set priorities and meet required deadlines
  • Comfortable working in a small organization
  • Public sector experience a plus
  • New York City residency required within 180 days of hire

Director of Finance

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation (“BBP”) is the not‐for-profit corporation responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85‐acre sustainable waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River shoreline. Since 2010, BBP has constructed and opened more than 55 acres of new park space, reconnecting the public to the waterfront and providing world class open space and recreational opportunities. Design and construction of additional park space is currently funded and underway.

The Director of Finance will play an integral role in the day to day finance operations such as supervising staff accountants responsible for processing payables, tracking revenue from permit fees and concessionaires, and assisting in bookkeeping operations to manage the organization’s accounting, financial planning, budgeting, and financial analysis, and provide financial controls.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for financial planning and analysis, timely completion of monthly financial statements (actual vs. budget; P&L; balance sheet)
  • Lead and manage the annual audit process
  • Reviews the preparation of monthly bank reconciliations
  • Reviews the preparation of monthly journal entries and reconciles general ledger
  • Manage accounting staff responsible for day to day operations specifically, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Processes bi-weekly payroll and reconcile quarter IRS payroll to general ledger payroll
  • Work with program areas to ensure that financial management systems are set up appropriately for the needs of individual programs.
  • Maintain internal controls and compliance to safeguard the assets of the organization
  • Reporting monthly budget to actual results to junior and senior staff.
  • Develop and oversee the continuous improvement of accounting and financial process and systems to ensure maximum productivity

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate has experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area, and has previously overseen payroll activities
  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance with 3-5 years of progressive financial responsibility. Non-profit experience is a plus
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of Brooklyn Bridge Park
  • New York City residency is required within 180 days of employment.
