The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation (BBP), a not for profit corporation, is responsible for the design, construction and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85 acre, 1.3 mile, world-class park that stretches along the Brooklyn waterfront from Atlantic Avenue to Jay Street, north of the Manhattan Bridge. Adding much-needed open space for Brooklyn and New York City residents, Brooklyn Bridge Park contributes to the extraordinary revitalization of the waterfront in the New York Harbor, serving as a bridge from the commercial uses of previous centuries to the recreational uses of the future. Seasonal Turf and Irrigation Technician

The Turf & Irrigation Technician will report to the Turf Manager and Director of Horticulture and will work with other members of the horticulture department to maintain irrigation system and assist in other turf maintenance practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily turf maintenance including: mowing, string trimming, seeding, fertilizing, watering, and laying sod
  • Maintain all components related to irrigation system
  • Perform irrigation winterization to all systems
  • Assist with a variety of renovation projects including aeration, topdressing, and re-sodding
  • Organize, complete inventory, and maintain records of irrigation equipment
  • Safely apply fertilizers and complete records of application
  • Operate hand tools such as pole saws, loppers, hand saws, rakes, and shovels
  • Operate small equipment such as walk- and riding- lawnmowers, string trimmers, edge trimmers, and backpack leaf blowers
  • Operate large equipment such as motorized utility vehicles, tractors, and aeration equipment
  • Ensure all equipment is secured and well-maintained, including: washing, greasing, fueling, and arranging for service of equipment
  • Perform other general tasks as assigned by the Director of Horticulture and Turf Manager

Qualifications:

  • 2 or 4 year degree in turfgrass management or related field OR three (3) years hands-on experience in turf grass and irrigation maintenance OR any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary
  • Strong communication skills
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions
  • Ability to use power equipment and hand tools
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

Seasonal Gardener

Working collaboratively with other team members, the Seasonal Gardener is responsible for daily horticultural management of of Brooklyn Bridge Park, commensurate with established organizational mission, values, and standards. All beds, trees, and lawns are managed organically, with an emphasis on ecology. This position reports to the Horticulture Supervisors and the Director of Horticulture.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting Gardeners with the daily tasks of managing BBP’s planted areas
  • Caring for thousands of newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses
  • Planting and transplanting herbaceous plants and small trees
  • Understory tree and shrub pruning and maintenance
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Mowing and string trimming
  • Maintenance of all essential equipment
  • Weeding, brush clearing, and mulching
  • Debris and trash removal
  • Composting and compost facility maintenance
  • Research, data collection, and horticultural database maintenance
  • Interacting with park patrons in a professional manner as a representative of BBP
  • Leading volunteer groups and training long-term Zone Volunteers
  • Conducting educational workshops and tours for the public
  • Provide support to other members of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Operations Staff on a variety of tasks from maintenance work to gardening
  • Perform other duties as required in the scope of the job and as designated by Operations Management

Qualifications:

  • One or more years of horticulture experience or degree in horticulture and/or related field
  • Experience with various landscape maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of plant material, including turf
  • Knowledge of plant diseases and pests, as well as IPM strategies
  • Strong weed identification and management skills
  • Familiarity with irrigation systems
  • Ability to perform heavy, physical labor (lift 40 lbs) on a daily basis in all weather conditions
  • Previous experience in a facility maintenance and/or park setting;
  • Hardworking, energetic, self-motivated, and dedicated to the details;
  • Strong communication skills and basic computer knowledge
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed;
  • Comfortable working independently or with a team and outside in a park-setting.
  • Valid NYS Driver License

This position reports to the other Horticulture Supervisors and the Director of Horticulture.

Responsibilities:

  • With the Director of Horticulture, oversee and assign the daily tasks of gardening staff
  • Caring for thousands of newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses
  • Planting and transplanting herbaceous plants and small trees
  • Understory tree and shrub pruning and maintenance
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Mowing and string trimming
  • Maintenance of all essential equipment
  • Weeding, brush clearing, and mulching
  • Debris and trash removal
  • Provide help with seasonal tasks, including snow removal;
  • Composting and compost facility maintenance
  • Research, data collection, and horticultural database maintenance
  • Interacting with park patrons in a professional manner as a representative of BBP
  • Leading volunteer groups and training long-term Zone Volunteers
  • Conducting educational workshops and tours for the public
  • Provide support to other members of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Operations Staff on a variety of tasks from maintenance work to gardening

Capital Projects Intern

The Capital Intern at Brooklyn Bridge Park will assist the Capital Projects team on a variety of tasks related to the park’s construction and design. The intern will contribute to ongoing site planning and project management, including small construction projects, public outreach, communications regarding in-progress and upcoming construction projects, and internal file-keeping and plan organization.

Brooklyn Bridge Park seeks a graduate or undergraduate candidate in construction management, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design or related fields. We are seeking candidates who possess solid writing skills, research acumen, communications abilities, ability to read design plans and use graphic programs, and familiarity with construction project management. Candidates should be available to work up to 25 hours per week. This is a paid internship.
