Brooklyn Bridge Park + the Dumbo Improvement District are soliciting design proposals for barricade covers to be distributed throughout the Park and neighborhood of Dumbo, in Brooklyn, New York. The barricades will be stationed throughout the Park and Dumbo, as placemaking in situ, as well as for street closures, at events, and for other purposes–often sited in highly trafficked areas that serve as iconic photo ops, such as along the waterfront, Washington Street, Jane’s Carousel and more.
Your work will be on view for up to two years, beginning April 2022, will appear on several barricades, and will rotate throughout the neighborhood and park over the time period.
THE CREATIVE BRIEF
The Dumbo neighborhood and Brooklyn Bridge Park are among the most iconic locations in New York City, photographed thousands of times a day by visitors from across the City and around the globe. The “audience” is fluid and flexible: Dumbonians, New Yorkers, and visitors from further afield, some in Brooklyn for the first time, some seeking out your work specifically.
This is a chance to enliven the streetscape and bring your art to the people. This is a great opportunity to participate in the rich, cultural experience of this area and showcase your artwork where people congregate.
We ask that your work in some way reference the fact that Dumbo and the Brooklyn Waterfront are places sought out by people of all backgrounds, and the spirit of togetherness that public space can create – within the context of your style and practice.
