Join NYC Audubon and Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy for a very special bird walk in celebration of Black Birder’s Week!
Birding expert, Roslyn Rivas, from NYC Audubon will be leading in a bird walk through Pier 1 in both English and Spanish on the last day of Black Birders Week (May 28-June 3)! We’ll be distributing copies of NYC Audubon’s new English-Spanish field guide. Come and explore the woodlands and meadows, and enjoy views of the city and the waterbirds on the East River. All are welcome!
Bring binoculars if you have some! The Conservancy will have a few basic binoculars and kid binoculars available to borrow. Meets at Pier 1 entrance.
#BlackBirdersWeek got its start in 2020 as a primarily virtual event spurred by the Central Park birding incident involving the accomplished science writer and birder Christian Cooper. The event week and The BlackAFinSTEM Collective itself was created by a small group of friends and acquaintances to normalize the historically overlooked presence of Black birders, scientists, and nature enthusiasts in the field (literally and figuratively) in an effort to make the natural sciences more inclusive, diverse, and welcoming to people of all walks of life. The Collective also aims to inspire new audiences to engage in nature and share the stories of Black conservationists from across the globe.
