7/14, 7:00 pm: BRYAN ARIAS ONE THOUSAND MILLION SECONDS

PERFORMED BY GIBNEY DANCE COMPANY: NIGEL CAMPBELL, JULIA DISCENZA, ZUI GOMEZ, AMY MILLER, WILL NOLING

An abstract story of society and human existence, One Thousand Million Seconds explores the humanity of the performers and addresses themes of life, existence, and happiness. The work presents a series of disconnected vignettes that explore facets of modern life, reality, and time. The work wanders through human destinies—a trip that exposes the beauty of a some moments, and the pettiness of others; humor; tragedy; and life’s magnificence.

7/21, 7:00 pm: CUMBE PRESENTS ETO’O TSANA & MABINA DANSEUSES: W

CUMBE presents W, a dance piece that explores the marriage of traditional and contemporary Kongolese movement. With a cast of only Women, Mabina Danseuses explores strength, sisterhood and sensuality within their bodies, and challenges audiences’ views on the perception of women in Afro-rooted dances.

8/4, 7:00 pm: KIZUNA DANCE PRESENTS EXCERPTS OF THREE POISONS, KOIBITO, FORETOKEN & REBIRTH

Kizuna Dance presents both full works and excerpts from pieces in its current touring cycle, all inspired by aspects of the Japanese culture. The works span the company’s four year history and are rooted in topics such as Buddhism, salarymen, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and the visual art of Manabu Ikeda.
