The evening will begin with young writers mentored by Writopia Lab performing their own work, followed by readings from Roya Marsh and Anthony McPherson, two of NYC’s seasoned poets and Urban Word NYC mentors. The evening will end with a recitation of a collaborative poem under the glow of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Program will take place at the Granite Prospect on Pier 1 and is free and open to the public.

Writopia Lab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. Writopia Lab has locations on the Upper West Side and in Park Slope, as well as branches throughout the country.

Urban Word NYC champions the voices of New York City youth by providing platforms for critical literacy, youth development and leadership through poetry, hip-hop, and music. We offer free and uncensored writing workshops at our office and in schools throughout the city, college prep classes, and various performance opportunities.

Roya Marsh, is a New York Native as well as a nationally ranked poet/performer. She is a Mentor in Residence with Urban Word NYC and was the 2014 Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion. She ranked 2nd in the world at the Woman of the World Poetry Slam and has been featured in the Village Voice, Huffington Post, Blavity, Button Poetry, Def Jam’s All Def Digital, most recently on Lexus Verses and Flow and at many venues and colleges around the country. Actually, just google her, she’s hella googleable.

Anthony McPherson is a New York City resident whose biracial poetry intertwines various art forms, as well as a myriad of character impressions. He ranked 13th at the Individual World Poetry Slam in 2015, garnered the attention of Button Poetry, Huffington Post and Upworthy, and has gone viral multiple times with over 400,000 views each poem. He is a Nuyorican Grand Slam poet, and an Urban Word NYC alum and Mentor. Anthony represents those who left home far behind to make it, and those who will go far enough to find themselves - their best selves.
