2019 Honorees

John Watts

A Texas transplant with Brooklyn roots and Southern charm, John Watts co-founded global investment-management firm Fischer Francis Trees & Watts. He currently serves as Chairman, Sequel Energy Solutions, Inc. and is the former Co-President of BNP Paribas Asset Management. As one of the original founders of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Coalition, now Conservancy, John was a leading voice in the advocacy movement to turn the derelict piers off Brooklyn Heights into the park we know and love today.

Penelope Christophorou and Kara Hailey

Counsel at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, Penny Christophorou and Kara Hailey have provided legal and strategic expertise for the Conservancy’s advocacy and programming work in Brooklyn Bridge Park since 2007. Penny and Kara were particularly instrumental in bringing popular interim uses to the Brooklyn waterfront, most notably the Floating Pool, which operated off Pier 5, as well as Pier 1’s Pop-Up Park. Penny served on the Conservancy’s Board from 2007-2018, and was elected Secretary in 2011. Kara joined the board in 2008 and serves on the Executive Committee and is chair of the Conservancy’s Program Committee.
