August 5: Rejoice

Host and guest curator Madison McFerrin returns for the Summer Friday on August 5!

DJ Tara gets the party started at 5pm spinning a collage of soulful sounds that captures an eclectic vibe. Brooklyn singer-songwriter J. Hoard performs, his sound an eclectic combination of genres with vivid songwriting. Plus, a special guest will join!

This event is free, RSVP’s strongly encouraged – RSVP now! Note: Tonight’s (8/5) Summer Fridays schedule has been adjusted, and will now run 6:00-9:00pm (originally scheduled for 5:00-8:00pm).

  • DJ Tara

Absorbing the sounds of New York since her birth, Tara spins a collage of soulful sounds that captures an eclectic vibe. Her sets acknowledge the past while looking to the future and celebrating the now. Tara loves nightlife, having started out as an event producer and promoter. As a member of Rare Form, she helped originate Donuts are Forever, an annual fundraiser/tribute to hip hop producer J. Dilla, as well as Makossa Cookout, now over 10 years strong as a beloved summer hang. Tara believes being a DJ is more than just playing a mix of records; it is a matter of building trust between herself and the crowd and sharing the knowledge and love she has for the music and the feelings it projects onto the listeners. Tara’s aim in her sets is to give people a taste of the familiar as well as something new that may have never realized was needed in their musical memory.

  • J. Hoard

Hoard is a Brooklyn-based artist. In one performance you are given the core of the Black church and the allure of The Great White Way (Broadway). His original compositions and arrangements easily shift genres to articulate his vivid songwriting. This eclecticism has yielded songwriting collaborations with artists such as Black Coffee on his Grammy-winning Subconsciously album, Chance the Rapper (on his Grammy-winning Coloring Book album), Brasstracks, and hip-hop royalty Jean Grae & Quelle Chris. Additionally, he has worked closely with a host of jazz/experimental artists such as Kassa Overall, Jose James, TheLessonGK, and music legend Meshell Ndegeocello (singer on her Grammy-nominated Ventriloquism album). His premiere album, Big Creature, is slated for release next spring!

  • Madison McFerrin

Madison McFerrin is an independent musician based in Brooklyn, NY. Her critically acclaimed a cappella EP series, Finding Foundations, led Questlove to dub her sound “soul-appella.” After garnering praise as a Pitchfork Rising Artist, she mesmerized crowds on her debut US and EU tours with her powerful one-woman show. Her 2018 SXSW performance led legendary KCRW DJ Anne Litt to remark, “there’s some sort of joy and beauty in the way that she performs that really drew me in all that much more.” Madison’s You + I EP expanded upon her a cappella sound with AFROPUNK highlighting how “lush production and instrumentation accompany her angelic voice” and The FADER noting how “warm harmonies feel effortless.”

Despite COVID canceling her return to SXSW and 2020 touring plans, Madison continued to develop her artistry. Quarantine gave her time to hone the production skills showcased on “Hindsight” and her viral track, ”GUILTY,” which perfectly captured the mood of joy and relief following the George Floyd verdict. In 2022, Madison eagerly anticipates sharing more new music with the world.

About The Festival of New York

This summer marks the inaugural Festival of New York, a collaboration and celebration of the best this city has to offer: art, culture, and most importantly, US—the people whose hearts beat for New York. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, we’re banding together—we’re talking live musical events, city-wide dance parties, neighborhood sports, volunteer opportunities, and so much more. The Festival offers the chance to grow, connect, and take action, all while celebrating everything that makes our city the place to be. Let’s celebrate our resilience and show the world that New York never left. The comeback summer is here!
