BBP Wins 2010 Designing the Parks Honor Award for Master Plan

Brooklyn Bridge Park and Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. were recognized last week with an Honor Award for park design as part of the inaugural Designing the Parks Award competition sponsored by the National Park Service’s Denver Service Center and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

The park received an Honor Award in the Master Plan category, and was one of 17 total award recipients out of 69 entries. The awards recognized “outstanding examples of recent public park design” and were judged on six criteria including “reverence for place,” “sustainability,” and “an integrated research, planning, design and review process.” According to the award jury, “the Master Plan for Brooklyn Bridge Park will transform more than 80 acres of derelict industrial waterfront into a socially and ecologically active urban park.”

Other New York City award winners included Teardrop Park (also designed by Michael Van Valkenburg Associates, Inc.), Concrete Plant Park, a component of the Bronx River Greenway, and Hudson River Park.
