Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy Launches TIDES

September 23, 2016

by Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy on Sep 23, 2016

BROOKLYN, September 23, 2016—Ten students between the ages of 14 and 18 will join a new volunteer platform at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Saturdays, September 24 through October 29, 2016. Teens Interested in & Dedicated to Environmental Sciences (TIDES) will assist education and horticulture staff at Brooklyn Bridge Park while exploring and learning more about their surroundings.

Managed by the volunteer department of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, the 6-week pilot program will connect students with the Park and its staff to complete community service hours through gardening, seining, coastal cleanup, and oyster cage monitoring.

“We’re excited to start a volunteer program specifically for teens,” said Nancy Webster, Executive Director of the Conservancy. “TIDES will be a unique opportunity for teenagers to explore ecology and environmental sciences in an unparalleled park setting.”

“We’re very happy to develop this program and diversify our volunteer activities. We’ve always had good standing adult volunteer opportunities in the Park such as Green Team, Zone Volunteers, Docents, and Park Greeters. TIDES will be our first program geared toward teenagers—not only from Brooklyn, but from across the Boroughs,” said Alison Dorsey, Director of Programs for the Conservancy.

Volunteers are essential members of the Brooklyn Bridge Park community and are critical to the success of its programs. In 2015, the Conservancy partnered with 1,436 volunteers who collectively served over 10,000 hours. This year is on track to exceed those numbers.
