Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn Bridge Park today welcomed a herd of four Nubian goats from Rhinebeck that will be working along the berm at the Pier 3 uplands over the summer. The four brothers named Horatio, Eyebrows, Minnie and Hector, will clear the landscape of weed growth in an ecologically friendly way, without herbicides or other harmful products which are not used in the Park. They are also uniquely capable of working on the berm’s steep incline.
“We are excited to welcome these four goats to the park this summer and put them to work clearing out the berm,” said Regina Myer, Brooklyn Bridge Park President. “For years goats have proven to be an ecologically friendly and efficient way to take care of weeds and other invasive plant species. The work they will be doing this summer should make a big difference in reducing the berm’s weeds along the Pier 3 uplands.”
The goats will be protected inside a perimeter fence and will be overseen by Brooklyn Bridge Park staff for the duration of their stay. They will be housed in a shed overnight. Plans are to expand this pilot goat-gardener program should it prove successful.
The goats come from Green Goats, a goat farm in Rhinebeck, New York, which specializes in the use of goats for landscape restoration and maintenance. Recently, goats have successfully been deployed to remove invasive plants and weeds in parks across the City, including Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx, and Prospect Park in Brooklyn. They have also worked at Hugh Moore Park in Easton, PA, Lincoln Woods in Rutherford, NJ and the Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park, NY.
